NBC 4 first reported that Ionescu's home—shared with her husband, former NFL player Hroniss Grasu—was burglarized on Monday, December 15. Law enforcement officers responded to the house around 8 p.m. after the couple's home alarm was triggered. Fortunately, neither Ionescu nor Grasu was home at the time of the incident.

According to police, two burglars wearing ski masks entered Ionescu's home and stole several handbags worth more than $60,000. No arrests have been made in the burglary yet; however, police took a report and are reviewing security camera footage.

Ionescu, 28, was the New York Liberty's first overall pick in the 2020 draft and has since become one of the best players in the WNBA. She's a four-time All-Star and WNBA champion. Her husband, on the other hand, also comes from the world of sports, as he played football for the Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens, and Tennessee Titans.

While the pair were both standout athletes at the University of Oregon, they didn't start dating until after college. They became Instagram official in 2021, when Ionescu shared a sweet image of her and Grasu on Instagram, writing, "Happy Birthday to my person! Always smiling with you."

Two years later, Grasu proposed to the basketball star in January—a moment Ionescu opened up about on TikTok, explaining that she was "completely shocked and caught off guard." They married in March 2024 in Laguna Beach, California, in front of basketball icons such as Vanessa Bryant and Satou Sabally.

"Being able to put the world on pause for two weeks and celebrate something that is just so special, it was definitely very memorable and we're still coming down from it," Ionescu said to PEOPLE.

Since joining the league, Ionescu has shattered records and helped take the sport to the next level—releasing her own signature shoe with Nike and gracing the cover of the NBA 2K WNBA Edition.

This year's cover featured Chicago Sky star Angel Reese. When Ionescu had the chance to speak about seeing the 23-year-old up close and personal on the 2026 edition while also wearing her own signature sneaker, the "Angel Reese 1," Ionescu only had great things to say.

"I feel like it was like knocking two birds with one stone and just having this amazing moment to kind of showcase to the world a shoe she's been working on for a really long time, and also an elite company with signature shoes," she said.

"It's been amazing to see," she added before saying, "more and more women getting signature shoes, and obviously she's well-deserved of that."

Ionescu isn't the only professional athlete to fall victim to a home burglary.

According to ESPN, Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders' home was also targeted in November 2025.

The break-in occurred while Sanders was playing against the Baltimore Ravens at Huntington Field.

Three individuals entered the NFL player's home at around 6:46 PM EST wearing masks and gloves before leaving at around 6:58 PM with the athlete's personal property.

Approximately $200,000 worth of items were stolen.

Other Athletes Have Been Targeted

Prior to that, other athletes' homes were also targeted, including those of Luka Doncic, Joe Burrow, and Jeffrey Simmons.

In 2024, Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce also fell victim to home burglaries. Ahead of his team's game against the Buffalo Bills, Mahomes spoke candidly about the experience.

"Obviously, it’s frustrating, disappointing," he said. "I can't get into too many of the details because the investigation is still ongoing. But obviously it's something that you don’t want to happen to, really, anybody but obviously yourself."

During season 2 of Netflix's docuseries "Quarterback," Burrow opened up about his experience, admitting that life in the public eye makes him "uncomfortable."

"My life is very public. That comes with the job, but there's certain parts of your life that are yours. Your house is one of those," he said.
