Charlie Austin has revealed that he was rejected by his former club QPR after applying for a coaching job.
The 37-year-old striker posted the disappointing news on social media as he missed out on working within QPR’s academy.
Austin, who played 148 times and scored 61 goals across three spells with the Championship side, had an interview for the position.
He posted on X: “First job interview disappointment.
“Gutted not to progress to the next stage for @QPRAcademy coaching team. The club I really wanted to work with.
“Will keep working hard and hoping my time will come.
“Good luck to whoever lands the role, what a club you get to join!”
In reply to his post, a fan questioned whether Austin expected to get the coaching role as he previously played for QPR.
However, he made sure to shut those suggestions down, adding: “No hidden agenda. Just honest disappointment at missing out on a role at a club I think highly of.
“Nothing but respect for QPR, the process was fair and professional, everyone was great.
“As I said will keep working hard for my time to come! This just weren’t my time.”
Austin has not yet taken a role in coaching, and his playing career is still ongoing with semi-pro club Hungerford Town.

Austin’s goal-filled career
Austin is clearly looking for the next step in his career as he nears the end of his playing days at the age of 37.
The forward has played 218 times in the Championship and over 100 times in the Premier League since 2011.
As mentioned, he played 148 times for QPR, while he has also featured 133 times for Swindon Town, scoring 60 goals.
He made 90 appearances for Burnley too, netting 44 times.
Austin scored 31 times across his time with Southampton and West Brom, and also had a stint in Australia in 2022.
In total across his professional playing career, he scored exactly 200 goals in 510 games across all levels.
