Former Florida State Seminoles quarterback Tommy Castellanos could receive another opportunity to play college football after a preliminary injunction issued by US District Court Judge Charlotte Sweeney granted athletes from the 2022 high school recruiting class an additional year of eligibility.

The ruling, issued on Friday in the US District Court of Colorado, came after the NCAA Division I Council approved a new five-for-five eligibility model in June. That policy gave athletes who graduated high school in 2023 or later five years to complete five seasons of competition. Sweeney determined that excluding the Class of 2022 caused “irreparable harm” to those athletes and issued a class-wide preliminary injunction extending the same eligibility opportunity.

Castellanos is “open” to returning to college football, per On3’s Pete Nakos. His agent said multiple programs have already expressed interest, and Castellanos is willing to return either as a quarterback or as an athlete. Although he has only played quarterback during his college career, he attended two NFL minicamps as a wide receiver after going undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft.

It’s another attempt by Castellanos to extend his collegiate career. Following the 2025 season, he sought an NCAA waiver for an additional year of eligibility but was unsuccessful. The recent court ruling has reopened that possibility, although the NCAA is expected to challenge the decision, meaning the eligibility status of Class of 2022 athletes remains unresolved.

A second season at Florida State appears improbable because the Seminoles have added Ashton Daniels, Malachi Marshall and Dean DeNobile through the transfer portal, signed high school quarterback Jaden O’Neal, and retained Kevin Sperry. If the injunction remains in effect, Castellanos could instead enter the transfer portal and spend his fifth season with another program, which would be the fourth school of his college career.

Across stops at UCF, Boston College and Florida State, Castellanos has appeared in 38 games. He has completed his career with 6,449 passing yards, 48 touchdown passes and 28 interceptions while adding 1,984 rushing yards and 24 rushing touchdowns, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. During his only season at Florida State, he threw for 2,760 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions, while rushing for 557 yards and nine more scores.
