Bynes has been candid about when she says her substance use first started, and the point where she feels things spiraled. The former Nickelodeon star previously revealed she began using marijuana at 16, but said it was when she started taking Adderall, a medication prescribed for ADHD, that her problems really began.

Looking back on her time filming "Hall Pass" in 2011, Bynes described how she was using the pills on set, saying, "When I was doing [2011 film] 'Hall Pass,' I remember being in the trailer and I used to chew the Adderall tablets because I thought they made me [more] high [that way]. I remember chewing on a bunch of them and literally being scatterbrained and not being able to focus on my lines or memorize them for that matter."

Not long after, Bynes pulled out of the project, which ultimately became the final film she worked on before stepping away from acting.
