Donald Trump says he won’t be attending next month’s Super Bowl in San Francisco, and he’s not exactly keeping it classy about the entertainment lineup either. The president made it clear he’s staying home not only because of the distance, but because he’s unhappy with the NFL’s high-profile performance choices. Donald Trump took aim at the artists selected for the game’s opening ceremony and the coveted halftime slot, suggesting the league is leaning into performers he sees as hostile to him and his political movement.

Donald Trump, who attended the 2025 Super Bowl in New Orleans, said travel is a major reason he’s skipping this year’s matchup in Northern California. "It’s just too far away. I would (have gone otherwise)," he told The New York Post. "I’ve gotten great hands for the Super Bowl; they like me. I would go if, you know, it was a little bit shorter."

He also indicated his attendance would be different if the event were closer to Washington, D.C., saying he would have “definitely” gone if the game weren’t so far from the White House.

Even so, Donald Trump didn’t frame his absence as just a logistical issue. In the same interview, he took a direct swipe at the NFL’s entertainment decisions, zeroing in on the halftime performer and suggesting the selection is divisive. "I’m anti-them. I think it’s a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred. Terrible."

The remarks come as Bad Bunny, born in Puerto Rico and known for Spanish-language hits, has been tapped for the halftime show.

Bad Bunny, whose songs are nearly all in Spanish, had previously refused to perform in the United States over fears ICE would raid his shows. The 31-year-old singer sent a clear message to the Latino community after being unveiled as the halftime act back in September. "What I’m feeling goes beyond myself," he said. "It’s for those who came before me and ran countless yards so I could come in and score a touchdown… this is for my people, my culture, and our history."

His announcement as halftime performer sparked an angry backlash from influential MAGA figures.

As the Super Bowl nears, claims are now surfacing that Bad Bunny plans to lean heavily into queer fashion and political symbolism on the big stage. According to Radar Online, a source close to the singer alleged he isn’t rattled by the backlash and intends to push boundaries, including reportedly planning to wear a dress.

An anonymous stylist also claimed the look would be a “political thunderbolt disguised as couture,” described as a tribute to historical LGBTQ+ figures in Puerto Rico, while another source insisted he’s “not playing it safe” and claimed the NFL “has no idea what’s coming. Zero.” The source added, “Let them complain. The dress is already being sewn,” they said.

NFL Taps Green Day For Super Bowl Opening Ceremony As Band’s Anti-Donald Trump History Resurfaces

And it’s not just the halftime show drawing attention. Earlier in January, the NFL announced Green Day would perform at the opening ceremony in Santa Clara, a move that has already stirred conversation given the band’s past political messaging.

Green Day, meanwhile, has previously changed lyrics in their songs to underline their own anti-MAGA stance. To ring in 2025, during a set on "Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve," the lead singer, Billie Joe Armstrong, replaced the line “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” with “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda”. The song was originally released to criticize former President George Bush in 2004.

This isn’t the first time the band has targeted Trump. The rock band previously scorned the president at the American Music Awards in 2016, and responded to Trump’s indictment in August with limited edition merchandise featuring his mugshot.

For now, Donald Trump says he’s sitting this Super Bowl out, but with the halftime and opening ceremony already igniting heated reaction, the NFL’s biggest night of the year is shaping up to be about far more than football.
