Jillian Lauren, the soon-to-be ex-wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, has broken her silence about her infamous altercation with the law.

The best-selling author made headlines in April after she was shot and arrested for allegedly firing a weapon at authorities during their pursuit of a hit-and-run suspect. The incident occurred in the former couple's Los Angeles neighborhood.

A month before her altercation with authorities, Jillian Lauren revealed she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and later underwent back-to-back surgeries. She has since pulled the plug on her marriage to Weezer bassist Scott Shriner.

Lauren shared her side of the story in an emotional interview, revealing that she never intended to have a standoff with authorities in her backyard. She claimed her fight-or-flight mechanism had kicked in, and she only grabbed her gun to ensure her family's safety.

“I was doing the best I knew to protect my family. The impulse was self-defense,” Lauren explained. Unfortunately, the aftermath was more than she expected, with the “Behold the Monster” author noting that her “world fell to pieces.”

Lauren compared her situation to getting an entire deck of cards in order and throwing them in the air one day. “I’m still waiting to see how they’re gonna land,” she told Rolling Stone in her first interview since the incident. Although she could not go into detail about her case, the writer shared some of her experiences.

Lauren recalled getting arrested and taken to jail for attempting to harm a police officer. While the headlines made her situation seem far worse than it actually was, she enjoyed her brief stay in police custody, where she tried to memorize the graffiti on the walls.

According to the best-selling author, the time she spent in her cell helped her get out of her head and put herself in the shoes of past detainees. “In the throes of it, I was saying I will never do a book about this because I can’t experience this again,” Lauren recalled.

Despite her initial hesitation to pen her experiences, Lauren confessed that as a writer, books were her thing, implying that she might use her imprisonment as inspiration for her next story. She ultimately escaped prolonged jail time when a judge found her eligible for the mental health diversion program.

Lauren pleaded not guilty to the charges against her and entered the mental health diversion program, allowing her to escape jail time. She joked that when the news got out, she would tell people, “I’m not just a gun-toting criminal, now I’m a crazy one.”

However, finding humor in her situation did not change the cold truth of her past. “My PTSD is a very real thing. I’m a victim of sex trafficking and domestic violence,” Lauren stressed. She claimed that when she saw the headlines, what she really thought was that people were too scared to talk about mental health problems.

On the other hand, Lauren felt like she was in the best position to talk about it. She prioritized self-care and underwent counseling since the incident, which influenced her decision to end things with Shriner. She noted they had grown apart, with the police incident widening the gap between them.

Lauren ended up in a face-off with authorities on April 8 while they were searching her Eagle Rock neighborhood for a hit-and-run suspect. The Blast reported that the search took cops to the author's backyard, where she appeared with a gun.

Officers behind the fence repeatedly asked Lauren to drop her weapon, but she refused to comply with their demands. She allegedly raised the gun and fired at officers, forcing them to defend themselves by shooting at her.

The exchange of bullets saw Lauren getting hit in her shoulder and crawling back into her home. She later received medical treatment before being arrested for attempted murder of a peace officer.

The charge was dropped and changed to discharge of a firearm with gross negligence and felony assault with a semiautomatic handgun.
