Matthew McConaughey is not taking any chances with AI.

The actor has now taken a legal stance that deters the use of his likeness by artificial intelligence in an attempt to discourage the "misuse" of AI.

He has also secured a trademark for his popular catchphrase, "Alright, alright, alright,” from the classic, “Dazed and Confused.”

In an unprecedented move that shifts the battle against artificial intelligence from the studio lot to the federal court, McConaughey has officially trademarked himself.

According to WSJ, the “Interstellar” star has secured eight distinct trademark approvals from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, effectively turning his unique persona, including his face, his voice, and even his cadence, into protected intellectual property.

This legal approach is designed to prevent AI applications or users from simulating his likeness without permission, a concern that has become a flashpoint for performers across the globe.

The approved filings consist of specific audio and visual brand markers that encapsulate the essence of his celebrity. These include a sound mark for his iconic "Alright, alright, alright" catchphrase from the 1993 film “Dazed and Confused,” as well as short video clips of him standing on a porch or sitting by a Christmas tree.

According to Variety, McConaughey’s lawyers filed for trademark protection on the phrase in December 2023 and were granted approval in 2025.

By registering these as trademarks, McConaughey’s legal team is creating a "clear perimeter" around his identity, ensuring that any use of his voice or image requires his explicit sign-off and proper attribution.

Building on his effort to create a federal "perimeter" around his persona, McConaughey is prioritizing the protection of the very phrase that played a huge role in launching his career.

For the Oscar winner, trademarking his signature "Alright, alright, alright" is an act of preserving a piece of cinematic history that has followed him for over 30 years.

First uttered by his character David Wooderson in the 1993 classic “Dazed and Confused,” these three words were improvised, as he was “never supposed to be in” the scene.

McConaughey told PEOPLE Magazine that he takes the phrase's enduring popularity as a "compliment," and even included it in his 2014 Academy Award acceptance speech.

Notably, the catchphrase itself was a product of pure improvisation, born when a young, nervous McConaughey was trying to find his character's motivation.

Just as McConaughey is now using federal trademarks to safeguard his unique identity from AI clones, he once looked for a "spiritual sign" to protect himself from a life of permanent bachelorhood.

In a candid entry in his “Lyrics of Living” newsletter, the “True Detective” star revealed that before meeting his wife, Camila Alves, he spent his 30s struggling with the "relight vision" of never finding a lifelong partner, per The Blast

He revealed that although he had “met, spent time with, and seriously dated some wonderful women,” he still struggled to make a real connection with them.

Despite high-profile relationships with stars like Sandra Bullock and Penelope Cruz, McConaughey admitted his dating life was a series of "stops, no stays" until a bizarre and vivid dream changed his entire perspective.

In this "green light" dream, the actor saw himself as an 88-year-old patriarch celebrating on a porch with 88 children and 22 different mothers.

The vision culminated in the entire group gathering for a family photograph in front of a large-format box camera.

As the countdown reached "one," McConaughey experienced a "moment of clarity" that he interpreted as a message to surrender his frantic search for the perfect woman. Three months after heeding this sign and "quitting" his intentional search, fate led him to Camila Alves at a West Hollywood nightclub.

The actor noted that the dream was the catalyst that allowed him to stop forcing a connection and instead concede to a "natural selection process." Decades later, with a successful marriage and three children, McConaughey views that surreal nocturnal experience as the pivotal moment that prepared him to finally recognize "the one" when she finally floated into his life.

Just as McConaughey’s spiritual signs once led him to his wife, Camila, the couple recently found themselves at the center of a new maritime legacy.

In a ceremony that blended Hollywood glamour with centuries-old tradition, the pair officially christened the Star Princess, the newest addition to the Princess Cruises fleet, as reported by The Blast.

Hosted by lifestyle personality Dawn McCoy inside the dazzling Princess Arena, the event saw the McConaugheys step into the role of ship godparents.

The christening featured a signature McConaughey twist. Instead of the traditional champagne, the couple smashed a massive bottle of their own Pantalones Organic Tequila against the hull.
