Nearly one year after a deeply unsettling tragedy, Gene Hackman’s quiet hillside estate outside Santa Fe is commanding fresh attention.

Once a private refuge, the property has reentered the public conversation through an unexpected real estate listing.

The return of the secluded home blends celebrity legacy, unanswered curiosity, and the uneasy fascination that often follows places marked by loss and lingering memory.

Gene Hackman Home Reenters The Market

The Santa Fe property once owned by Hackman has officially returned to the market, listed for $6.25 million, according to Realtor.com.

Perched on a scenic hill and surrounded by sweeping views of the Rocky Mountains, the Southwestern-style ranch is already drawing interest despite its somber history.

Real estate insiders suggest the listing price may only be a starting point. One agent described the property’s appeal candidly, telling the Daily Mail, "The home is big, stylish and has great bones so there will be interest."

They added, "Even though two people passed away in the house, there will still be plenty of offers."

The agent also noted that celebrity ownership often elevates a home’s profile, regardless of the circumstances tied to it. Set within a gated community yet spread across six acres, the estate balances privacy with prestige. Its location offers both seclusion and proximity to Santa Fe’s cultural heartbeat, a combination that continues to attract buyers seeking something distinctive.

Inside The Santa Fe Property

The home itself reflects a distinctly Southwestern aesthetic. Designed as a Pueblo revival ranch, it underwent extensive remodeling in 1990 and was later featured in Architectural Digest, cementing its architectural significance.

At the time of the tragedy, however, the interior told a different story. Investigators documented cluttered rooms filled with clothing, boxes, diapers, and dog cages. The home was also found to be infested with rats, a stark contrast to its polished public image. Despite these conditions, health officials later clarified that the interior living spaces showed no active rodent presence.

Nestled among piñon and juniper trees, the property mirrors others in the region, where wildlife and mice are common due to the surrounding landscape.

Even so, the estate’s size, design, and views continue to define it as a rare offering in the Santa Fe market.

Hackman and his wife, Arakawa, were found dead inside the home on February 26, 2025.

Hackman, 95, died from heart disease with complications from Alzheimer’s disease roughly a week after Arakawa, 65, who succumbed to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.

Footage released by the Santa Fe County Sheriff revealed a haunting scene. Deputies entering the residence were met by the couple’s German shepherd, visibly distressed and remaining close to their bodies. The moment underscored the isolation of their final days and added an emotional layer to an already devastating discovery.

Authorities later determined that both deaths were due to natural causes. Hackman’s pacemaker data showed an abnormal heart rhythm on February 18, believed to be the day he passed.

While exact timelines remain uncertain, officials concluded the deaths occurred about a week apart.

Records released after a court ruling offered insight into Arakawa’s final days.

Her emails, phone calls, and internet searches revealed concerns about flu-like symptoms and breathing techniques. Between February 8 and the morning of February 12, she researched COVID-19-related illnesses and potential treatments.

Investigators noted that Arakawa contacted a medical concierge service in Santa Fe on February 12, though the call lasted less than two minutes. A missed return call later that day went unanswered.

In an earlier email to her masseuse, she explained she needed to reschedule because Hackman had woken up feeling unwell.

Body camera footage showed no signs of forced entry or disarray beyond the clutter already noted. Prescription medication was observed on a bathroom counter, and one of the couple’s dogs was found deceased in a crate near Arakawa.

Initially sealed, most investigative records were later released with strict limitations, ensuring no images of the bodies were made public.

Beyond the tragedy, the Santa Fe home stands as a final chapter in Hackman’s storied life.

His career spanned more than four decades, beginning in 1961 and encompassing unforgettable roles, including Lex Luthor in "Superman" and the inspiring coach in "Hoosiers." A five-time Oscar nominee, he won Academy Awards for "The French Connection" and "Unforgiven" before retiring in the early 2000s.

Arakawa, an accomplished artist and musician, built her own life far from Hollywood’s glare. Born in Hawaii, she studied piano, worked in television production, and later became vice president of a Santa Fe home décor store.

The couple relocated to New Mexico in the late 1980s, drawn by its artistic community and quiet retreat from fame.
