'Bachelorette' Katie Thurston Reveals Mom's Cancer Diagnosis Amid Her Own Battle
Katie Thurston's mom has sadly moved from standing beside her to battling cancer with her. The TV personality shared that her mom recently received her breast cancer diagnosis amid her own fight with the disease.
Early last year, Katie Thurston was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, which later spread to her liver and progressed to stage four. Throughout the year, she documented her journey, sharing regular updates on social media.
Inside Katie Thurston Advocating For Her Mom's Diagnosis
Thurston shared a life update on Instagram, and it was not the news many were expecting. She disclosed that her mom now has breast cancer as well, and the diagnosis came three weeks ago. Surprisingly, she revealed that it was not discovered by the doctors.
She explained that her mother had a mammogram in December and her results were normal. They said "negative and probably benign," the media personality wrote before noting that the doctors had indicated her dense breasts, but did not recommend further imaging.
The healthcare providers did not suggest a breast ultrasound; instead, they told her mother to come back in a year for her annual mammogram. Thurston then suggested her mom ask for a breast ultrasound, a move that changed the whole trajectory of things.
In the same post, she detailed how they found suspicious masses, scheduled an MRI, and performed biopsies, which led them to discover the cancer within two weeks of her routine mammogram. Part of her caption read:
"I hate that we have to be our biggest advocate, but also, it's what will save your life… We are getting more answers today, but I believe our own advocacy allowed us to catch this early."

Thurston's post had an emotional cloud over it. It was a dump of seven slides of the same photo of her younger self and her mom wearing happy smiles. So many fans were touched by her announcement, writing how sad they felt with the news, but were glad they caught the cancer early.
The media personality also wrote a comment advising fans ti request further imaging if they have a family history of breast cancer or dense breasts, which has received over a thousand likes. Many users sent love and prayers to the mother and daughter, with countless heart emojis, praising her for her advocacy.
"I am so sorry- you are an amazing advocate, and you both will get through this together," a fan wrote. Some shared their personal cancer experience and wrote hopeful messages about the moment when they would be cancer-free.
The 'Bachelorette' Alum Recently Shared A Ray Of Hope Update On Her Cancer Battle
About four days ago, Thurston posted an update on social media revealing that her recent liver MRI showed some good news. With a smile, she said, the cancer no longer exists in her liver, noting that this does not translate to being completely cancer-free.
Despite the happy news, there was a nip in the tracks; her liver enzymes were elevated. She stated that she hoped the liver enzyme levels would go down as she had to pause her cancer medication until they did. Because of this, she had to change her monthly blood draw schedule to fortnightly.
"Recently, my liver MRI continued to show no evidence of disease! TBD on my breasts. Those scans happen next month, so fingers crossed! In the meantime, I had to pause my medication until my liver enzymes return to normal," the 35-year-old wrote.
Bachelor Nation also reported that her treatment plan seems to be taking positive turns, as the tumors in her body have been shrinking.
The TV Personality Has A Solid Support System
Dealing with cancer is not a solo journey, and Thurston is grateful to have the love of her life by her side through it all. She tied the knot with Jeff Arcuri in an intimate ceremony shortly after her breast cancer diagnosis.
Arcuri hastened the marriage plans to be by her side from the beginning of her treatment, proving he is here to stay. The comedian has been a source of strength to her, which she said gives her a sense of relief or protection.
The Blast shared that the couple also made plans for building a family together. Acknowledging that the treatments might negativelyaffect Thurston’s fertility, they decided to freeze their embryos.
The pair had seventeen eggs retrieved and successfully fertilized six. Out of the six, only three made ti to the blastocyst stage, and after genetic testing, they were able to freeze two embryos. She revealed that one was Grade B while the other was Grade C.

Freezing their embryos is one of the steps the "FBoy Island" star and her husband took with the plans to build a family in the future. Looking forward to when her cancer battle is over, Thurston shared that she and Arcuri thought it wise for her body not to go through the struggle of pregnancy.
"Jeff and I discussed the importance of my health and that when the time comes, surrogacy will likely be the best option for us," she previously shared, and then addressed the backlash celebrities face for pursuing surrogacy.
The Blast shared that Thurston warned against fans casting judgment on those who follow that route wvwn when the public thinks they dont have to. She said, "This is a friendly reminder to stop judging celebrities who pursue surrogacy. You don't know what they have going on in their personal lives."
