Andhra Pradesh is set to receive another major infrastructure boost as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to visit the state for the inauguration of the Bhogapuram International Airport on August 1. Ahead of the visit, the Central Government has approved ₹229 crore for the modernization of the Visakhapatnam Railway Coaching Yard, adding another significant project to the state’s growing infrastructure pipeline.
The funding approval is expected to improve railway operations in Visakhapatnam while complementing the rapid development taking place across Andhra Pradesh in the aviation, transport, and logistics sectors.
₹229 Crore Approved for Visakhapatnam Railway Coaching Yard
The Ministry of Railways has given the green signal for the modernization of the coaching yard at Visakhapatnam Railway Station. The project has been sanctioned with an estimated cost of ₹229 crore.
The announcement comes at a significant time as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Andhra Pradesh for the inauguration of the Bhogapuram International Airport. The approval reflects the Centre’s continued focus on strengthening railway infrastructure in one of the state’s busiest transport hubs.
Why the Project Is Needed
Visakhapatnam Railway Station has been facing operational challenges due to limited coaching yard capacity. Every day, around 113 trains operate from the station while nearly 80,000 passengers use the railway station for their daily travel.
The existing yard is no longer sufficient to handle the increasing volume of train traffic. Because of space constraints, trains are often forced to wait near signal points before entering the platforms. This results in delays and affects the smooth movement of trains.
The modernization project aims to eliminate these bottlenecks and improve overall efficiency.
Major Works Planned
The sanctioned funds will be used to completely upgrade the existing coaching yard.
Key improvements include:
Expansion of the existing platforms.
Construction of six additional platforms.
Development of six new railway lines.
Removal of existing loop lines to improve train movement.
Installation of ramps, lifts, and escalators for passenger convenience.
Better yard management to reduce congestion and improve operational efficiency.
Once completed, the upgraded railway station is expected to handle higher passenger traffic while reducing delays caused by limited infrastructure.
Infrastructure Push Continues in Andhra Pradesh
The latest railway project adds to the series of infrastructure initiatives being implemented in Andhra Pradesh. Since the formation of the coalition government led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, several railway, road, port, and industrial projects have received fresh momentum with support from the Central Government.
The inauguration of the Bhogapuram International Airport, along with the modernisation of the Visakhapatnam Railway Coaching Yard, is expected to strengthen connectivity across North Andhra Pradesh and improve transportation facilities for both passengers and businesses.
With work expected to begin soon, the project is set to transform Visakhapatnam Railway Station into a more efficient and passenger-friendly transport hub while supporting the region’s long-term economic growth.
