Teyana Taylor Still Looks At Marriage To Iman Shumpert As 'Real Display Of Love' Despite Nasty Divorce Battle

Two years after ending her marriage to Iman Shumpert, Teyana Taylor is opening up about how that chapter shapes her life.

The “Straw” actress and the former NBA star wed in 2013 and parted ways in 2024, a separation that spiraled into a bitter legal dispute filled with accusations and court-imposed fines.

Despite the turmoil, Taylor acknowledges that her marriage to Shumpert was a genuine expression of love.

Teyana Taylor Admits Past Marriage To Iman Shumpert Still Shapes Her View On Romantic Relationships

In a recent interview, the “All’s Fair” actress reflected candidly on her former marriage to the basketball star, admitting that the relationship continues to influence how she views love.

Even after moving on to date actor Aaron Pierre, the “Google Me” singer said the marriage left a lasting impression. 

"One thing I don't do is rewrite history," she told Vanity Fair. "When I love, my love is real. So whatever you've seen was a real display of love until there was no more. And that's okay."

She also addressed their separation, describing it as "grieving the death of a living being," before sharing glimpses of her co-parenting journey. 

The "Gonna Love Me" singer said, "I think once children are involved, you understand the importance of really still having to show up for each other. At least for the next 18 years and being the best co-parents that we can be."

Court Slams Teyana Taylor With Hefty Fine In Legal Showdown With Iman Shumpert

Following the announcement of their split in 2024, Taylor and Shumpert became embroiled in a heated legal battle.

In May 2025, the former Cleveland Cavaliers star accused Taylor of violating the confidentiality clause in their settlement by discussing their divorce in a March Instagram video. He claimed her public comments negatively impacted his income.

Months later, a judge ruled in Shumpert's favor, finding Taylor in contempt of court and ordering her to pay him $70,000, as The Blast reported. Shumpert also alleged that his ex-wife breached their agreement by disparaging him in front of their children.

Teyana Taylor Denies Seeking Iman Shumpert's Imprisonment

Shumpert's court victory followed Taylor's earlier attempt to have him held in contempt, alleging he leaked sealed documents to the press. 

According to The Blast, the singer's attorney argued that "[Iman] has consistently exhibited an alarming disregard for the consequences of his contemptuous behavior.” As a result, court filings reportedly sought a 20-day jail sentence and fines.

The “One of Them Days” actress, however, denied pushing for her ex-husband's incarceration. "I never tried to send Iman to jail. I'm still not trying to send Iman to jail,” Taylor declared in an Instagram live. 

Teyana Taylor Claimed Iman Shumpert Diminished Their Marital Estate

Before the contempt claims, Taylor filed a 2024 motion accusing Shumpert of violating Georgia's automatic standing order by making major financial moves during their divorce.

Court records obtained by The Blast show that, with the help of financial analyst Mike Bean, Taylor uncovered multiple loans and withdrawals from marital accounts. 

The transactions included two loans from Merrill Lynch of $44,000 and $886,285, respectively, a $878,760 withdrawal from one Park Avenue account, and a second $1,883,899 loan.

Additionally, a $105,000 life insurance policy was also discovered, thereby allegedly reducing the marital estate by nearly $3.8 million in 2023, in breach of the standing order.

The ‘A Thousand And One’ Actress Bags First Golden Globe Award Win 

While moving past the tumultuous legal dispute between her and Shumpert, Taylor achieved a major career milestone, earning her first-ever Golden Globe Award.

She won Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role as Perfidia Beverly Hills in “One Battle After Another.”

During her acceptance speech, Taylor gave a playful shoutout to her daughters watching from upstairs at the Beverly Hilton. She joked, per The Hollywood Reporter, "Y'all better be off them damn phones and watching me right now."

She also praised director Paul Thomas Anderson, saying, "Thank you for your vision, your trust, and your brilliance. My gratitude is endless."

She ended her speech with a powerful message to Black women. "Our softness is not a liability,” Taylor preached. Our depth is not too much. Our light does not need permission to shine. We belong in every room we walk into."
