Swedish Thriller Series ‘Bytet’: Cast Announced & 2026 Release Confirmed

An exciting new Swedish thriller series, Bytet, is coming to Netflix in 2026. The four-part thriller will star Emma Appleton, Fares Fares, Frida Gustavsson, and Jakob Oftebro. Here’s everything we know about Bytet on Netflix.

Bytet is an upcoming Swedish thriller series directed by Kasper Barfoed and adapted from the novel of the same name by best-selling crime author Stefan Ahnhem. Amanda Högberg and Axel Stjärne are the two writers on the series. Asp Varhos is the production studio behind the series, with Frida Asp and Fatima Varhos as the producers.

Stefan Ahnhem, the author of Bytet shared his excitement about the upcoming adaptation:

What is the plot of Bytet?

Netflix has provided a synopsis for Bytet:

“In an effort to save their marriages, Stockholm-based Carl (Fares Fares) and Helene (Frida Gustavsson) arrange a holiday-house swap with Adam (Jakob Oftebro) and Scarlett (Emma Appleton), who live in Sicily. But upon arriving at their new exclusive home, Carl and Helene start to sense that something feels off. The house doesn’t quite match the pictures of the romantic villa, and unsettling questions arise about the strangers now living in their home. Who are these people they’ve traded homes with? Meanwhile, Adam and Scarlett move into Carl and Helene’s house in Stockholm’s archipelago, a stunning, modern architectural dream. But despite its beauty, things feel awkward. Why are the neighbours so nosy? Why is the walk-in closet locked? As both couples try to reconnect amidst growing suspicions, dark secrets begin to surface.”

Who are the cast members of Bytet?

The four confirmed leads of the series are Emma Appleton, Fares Fares, Frida Gustavsson, and Jakob Oftebro.

Emma Appleton will be familiar to Netflix subscribers for playing the role of Princess Renfri in the first season of The Witcher. She will also be starring in Netflix’s upcoming television spin-off of Extraction.

Fares Fares previously starred in HBO shows such as Westworld and Chernobyl. He also starred in Amazon’s The Wheel of Time and on Netflix in The Decameron.

Frida Gustavsson previously starred in Netflix’s Vikings Valhalla series in the role of Freydís Eiríksdóttir. She also played the role of Geralt’s mother, Visenna, in the first season of The Witcher.

Norwegian actor Jakob Oftebro has starred in Netflix shows such as Norseman, The Letter for the King, and Lilyhammer. Outside of Netflix, he has starred in shows such as The Bridge, 1864, and Agent Hamilton.
