The late director’s son, Nick Reiner, was spotted near his parents’ home just hours before the stabbing amid a reportedly deteriorating mental health.

Inside Rob Reiner’s Son's Last Sighting Before The Double Homicide

A new surveillance video of Nick taking a calm walk near his parents’ home in Brentwood has been released. In it, the 32-year-old donned a simple pair of jeans and a long-sleeve shirt while his backpack rested on his left shoulder.
He was spotted walking away from the direction of Rob and Michele’s estate a few hours before midnight on Saturday. The gas station, which picked up the video, stood a few blocks away from the late couple’s home.
As detailed by Page Six, Rob, Michele, and Nick were previously engaged in a heated argument at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party, where he reportedly freaked out.
The fight came amid revelations from the late couple to their close friends that Nick’s mental health was getting worse, and they had become very worried for him.
Nick Reiner’s Troubled Past Of Addiction And Wild Adventures Resurfaced

The Blast shared that about seven years ago, the 32-year-old confessed in an interview that his first sexual encounter with a sex worker really activated his struggles with addiction.
Nick had recalled stealing money from his parents’ purse to procure the services of a sex worker he found on Craigslist, as recommended by his friend.
From that encounter when he was 14, Nick’s reality descended into a journey with substance abuse, including heroin. His drug abuse cycle in his teenage years saw him go in and out of rehab admissions while being forced to live on the streets with homeless people.
In 2016, he shared that he met really great people while he spent weeks on the streets, and the time he also spent isolated from his loved ones allegedly helped him overcome his addiction issues.
Rob Reiner Had Always Stood Up For His Son

Nick reportedly achieved sobriety in 2015, and he told the story of his victory and troubles in the semi-autobiography movie, “Being Charlie,” where he was credited as the co-writer and Rob, the director.
The script followed the life of a successful actor who also aspired to become a politician, and the Achilles heel of his son, who was an addict.
The movie revealed several behind-the-scenes facts about Nick and Rob’s relationship, including a chilling statement that read, “I'd rather you hate me, and you be alive.”
The father and son duo also appeared in another joint podcast where Rob expressed that he understood the pressure of having a famous father and grandfather, from Nick’s perspective.
“People can say what they want, but they don't know what he's going through, what he's experiencing, or why he's done what he does. It's pretty dumb, pretty ignorant,” the director said at the time.
Nick, during the appearance, added that it was tough for him to navigate his weakness in front of everyone who judged him as a spoiled rich kid.

The Blast noted that their daughter, Romy, was the one who eventually found their lifeless bodies inside the home. Romy’s attention was drawn to the building, which she lived across from, after a masseuse whom the late couple had booked rang the doorbell, but did not get an answer.
The masseuse left following the futile effort, after which Romy crossed over to check on her parents and walked in on their corpses. Romy reportedly assured the investigating officers who were called on the scene that a certain family member should be a suspect due to their volatile nature.
Police have since arrested Nick on Monday and booked him for felony murder. He was initially held on a $4 million bond, which has been rescinded, and he is currently held in custody without bail.
Rob Reiner’s Son Was Hit With Formal Charges Of First-Degree Murder

Nick has now been slammed with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of Rob and Michele by Los Angeles prosecutors. According to the Los Angeles District Attorney, Nathan Hochman, the charges leveled against Nick also include special circumstance allegations of multiple murders.
This clause can reportedly significantly increase the severity of any sentence, should Nick be convicted. Prosecutors also included a special allegation that Nick personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, specifically a knife, in the murder.
The District Attorney emphasized that such charges usually come with a maximum punishment of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or, at worst, the death penalty.
Hochman continued that a case of this nature carried a very emotional undertone because of the “intimate and often brutal nature of the crime."
