The drama surrounding Rob Reiner's son continues with the postponement of his arraignment on murder charges.

Nick Reiner, the second son of Rob and Michele Reiner, has been facing the heat for allegedly stabbing his famous parents to death. He was scheduled to face two counts of first-degree murder on Wednesday, January 7, but his attorney suddenly backed out.

Michele and Rob Reiner took their final breaths in their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025. The gruesome scene was discovered by the youngest of their three children, daughter Romy, with Nick subsequently getting arrested and detained for the crime.

According to new reports, Nick's arraignment saw his high-profile criminal defense lawyer withdrawing from the case. Alan Jackson announced his exit as legal representative during a hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court after conferring with Judge Theresa McGonigle.

Jackson reportedly spoke to the judge privately in her chambers, then reappeared in the courtroom to declare that he and his team had "no choice" but to withdraw from Nick's case. He did not elaborate on the reason for his exit; however, it might be due to a financial dispute.

The New York Times theorized that the Reiner family might be distancing itself from Nick and the murder case financially. Regardless of the reason, Jackson's sudden exit pushed Judge McGonigle to reschedule the arraignment to February 23, 2026.

Following Jackson's exit, Judge McGonigle handed Nick's case over to Kimberly Greene, a lawyer in the public defender's office. The legal umpire also asked for the alleged killer's opinion before the postponement of the arraignment.

Nick, who reportedly appeared in court wearing a brown jumpsuit, echoed his agreement to the postponement. The media outlet noted that this was the only moment Nick spoke in court, matching his behavior during his first court appearance, where his arraignment was also postponed.

As for why Jackson suddenly withdrew from the case, a source with direct knowledge about Nick's case alleged that his exit did not stem from his performance. They noted that Jackson was professional throughout his employment but did not share why he left.

The source noted that the Reiner family always wanted to work with Jackson, claiming lawyers from their camp immediately contacted him after Nick's arrest. As a high-profile lawyer, Jackson has represented multiple public figures, including Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey.

Jackson is also fresh off the win of defending Karen Read from murder charges in Massachusetts. The real reason the attorney decided to leave Nick's case remains unclear, as both parties are staying quiet, including the Reiner family.

When asked about Jackson's departure, a spokesperson for the Reiner family said, "They have the utmost trust in the legal process and will not comment further on matters related to the legal proceedings."

The High-Profile Attorney Believes In His Former Client's Innocence

TMZ shed more light on the outcome of Nick's failed arraignment, reporting that he will remain behind bars without the option of bail. His former lawyer, Jackson, also held a brief news conference where he boldly declared his faith in the alleged killer.

"Nick Reiner is NOT guilty of murder," Jackson claimed. As for his exit, the defense attorney stressed that the reasons behind his sudden departure were beyond his former client's control. On the other hand, prosecutors remain hopeful of a guilty verdict.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman noted that prosecutors were confident a jury would accept the facts and find Nick guilty of murdering his parents. Rob's son is yet to enter a plea following two arraignment postponements.

Weeks before his second arraignment postponement, The Blast reported that "Talk King" Billy Bush had weighed in on Nick's case and Jackson's enlistment as his defense attorney. He sparked fans' curiosity with a simple question: Who could be footing the bill?

As a high-profile criminal defense lawyer, Jackson naturally doesn't come cheap, which begs the question of who would be paying the legal expenses. Bush theorized that it was someone in the Reiner family who did not want Nick to get the death penalty.

Bush suspected it could be Nick's siblings, cousins, or even a close family friend. He believed Jackson was brought on board to push the "not guilty by reason of insanity" plea, a verdict that would save Nick's life but confine him in a state psychiatric facility.
