Nick Reiner's family does not want him to face the death penalty if found guilty of killing his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.

According to a new report, the family believes that the 32-year-old's alleged actions were all due to him being mentally unstable and not premeditated.

They intend to oppose any push for the death penalty amid the case as they think killing Nick Reiner isn't justice and won't fix what went wrong.

Why The Reiner Family Is Reportedly Against The Death Penalty For Alleged Killer, Nick Reiner

After Nick Reiner's arrest for the alleged murder of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner, speculation that he could face the death penalty has emerged and intensified ahead of his arraignment early next year.

While some may view the measure as a fitting punishment if the 32-year-old is found guilty, his family does not share the same view, according to reports obtained by Rob Shuter's #ShuterScoop.

A source close to the family claimed they see the tragic incident "as a catastrophic failure of mental health treatment," rather than a premeditated crime.

This claim aligns with reports that Nick had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was undergoing treatment, but experienced an adverse reaction when his medication was changed.

"Nick is seriously ill. They believe killing him won't bring Rob and Michele back — and it won't fix what went wrong," said the source.

One insider who spoke with the outlet about the medication change claimed that Nick suddenly became someone they no longer recognized.

The source described Nick as displaying "unpredictable" and confusing behavior, and at times becoming "frighteningly unstable."

But despite Nick's alleged act of murdering his parents, his family reportedly does not view him as the "monster" many others have written him off to be.

"They don't see him as a monster — they see him as someone who was failed," said a different source.

The family also intends to heavily push back on any prosecutorial plans in line with the death penalty as the murder case continues to proceed.

"Justice, to them, means treatment, accountability, and making sure this never happens again," the source further remarked. "Another death isn't justice."

The Alleged Killer Suffered  A Romantic Rejection Prior To The Murders

Days ago, reports emerged revealing another personal angle to Nick's issues that may have influenced his alleged murder of his parents.

A source claimed that he had recently faced a brutal romantic rejection that not only left him hurt but also made it difficult for him to cope due to his alleged social challenges.

"He'd just been turned down," the insider said about the alleged parent killer to Rob Shutter's #ShutterScoop, per The Blast. "He was awkward, overbearing, and completely unable to handle rejection. People didn't stick around because he came on too strong."

The insider also revealed that Nick's relationships with others were no better, noting that he would often try to make friends but came across as desperate and obsessive. This behavior drove people away whenever he attempted to forge meaningful connections.

Rather than viewing the rejections as a sign to work on himself, Nick allegedly became increasingly "toxic," even toward his loved ones.

"He doubled down, and it made him even more toxic to anyone around him," a second insider further remarked.

Following Nick's arrest, he is being held in a cell at Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.

He is currently on suicide watch, which requires him to wear a blue suicide-prevention smock at all times and be monitored via a video camera attached to his escorting officer whenever he leaves his cell.

At present, his only communication with others is limited to his legal counsel and authorized jail personnel.

Other communication privileges, such as speaking with family, have not been authorized.

Nick is scheduled to next appear in court on January 7, where he will be arraigned on two counts of first-degree murder.

These charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, or the death penalty if he is found guilty at trial.

During the arraignment, he will be allowed to enter a plea, which he refrained from doing during his first appearance some days ago. It is believed he intends to enter a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, and his family supports the move.
