News of Ray J's financial crisis came from the latest update on his Instagram page. He shared a video filmed on his phone, capturing him on the sidewalk next to tall palm trees decorated with festive Christmas lights. He explained that he had nothing to his name but his phone and a red bag containing a change of clothes.

According to Ray J, he was trying to hitch a ride from Tampa, Florida, to Los Angeles for what he hoped would become a show chronicling his experiences with families willing to help and aid him on his journey back to his children before Christmas. He named the show "Celebrity Hitchhiker," adding:

"I'm hitchhiking right now to try to get a place to stay tonight. Hopefully, I can be with a new family, and they can take me in and teach me about their rules and their goals and life, and then send me on my way to the next destination."

He doubled down on his stance in the post's caption, writing, "Things got bad for me. I just need shelter and a little help. I know there is still good people out in this world." Ray J also promised to repay those who came to his aid, reiterating that he hoped to get back to LA for Christmas.
