Official Trailer for Acclaimed Film 'My Father's Shadow' Set in Nigeria
"Everything is sacrifice. You just have to pray you don't sacrifice the wrong thing." Mubi has revealed an official trailer for one of the best indie discoveries of the year - a film titled My Father's Shadow, made by filmmaker Akinola Davies Jr. This premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and it was given a Special Mention Prize, then it played at tons of other fests: TIFF, London, Hamburg, Karlovy Vary, Athens, Chicago, etc. Mubi will debut this in theaters starting February 2026 next year - expect it to get awards & show up on a few Top 10 lists. Two young brothers explore Lagos with their estranged father during the 1993 Nigerian election crisis, witnessing both the city's magnitude and their father's daily struggles as the political unrest threatens their journey home. The award-winning debut from Akinola Davies Jr., My Father's Shadow is a powerful & poetic exploration of fatherhood, identity, and memory, starring Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù and introducing Godwin Egbo and Chibuike Marvellous Egbo as his two sons. This is an exceptionally beautiful film - it was listed in my own Top 10 of Cannes this year. Another winner I recommend watching whenever you can. // Continue Reading ›
