The NFL continues to make moves at the upcoming LX Super Bowl, headlined by Bad Bunny, that keep sparking political chatter.

Green Day has now been announced as the opening act for the February 8 show in Santa Clara, despite the band’s open criticism of Donald Trump

The move comes four months after Bad Bunny was named the halftime headliner, an artist who has also been openly critical of Trump. With Green Day now added to the lineup, fans are increasingly speculating that the NFL is pushing a message against Trump.

The NFL shared on Instagram that Green Day will kick off the Super Bowl LX opening ceremony on February 8 at Levi's Stadium, leading into Bad Bunny's halftime performance.

The announcement quickly fueled speculation among fans that the NFL is pushing an agenda against Trump.

One commenter wrote: "NFL going anti-MAGA on Feb 8 and I love it." Another dubbed it the "anti-MAGA halftime show." A third quoted an altered line from the band's hit "American Idiot," writing, "I'm not part of a MAGA agenda."

A fourth observer joked that the NFL is “Bringing all of Trump's favorites!,” while another user added the league has “the opportunity to do the greatest thing ever.”  This user hoped “Trump would be present,” and another person suggested Trump’s supporters are going to be upset

The political buzz around Green Day’s addition to the musical lineup stems from the band's long record of using performances and public platforms to criticize Trump.

During a show back in September, their frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong, took a swipe at the president’s hesitation towards the release of Jeffrey Epstein files just as a rocket launched.

"A rocket? Is that what that was?" Armstrong asked, before continuing: "I was like, 'There goes the Epstein files!" He said, per NME, as the crowd erupted in laughter.

In June, Armstrong condemned Trump's ICE raids in Los Angeles, telling the agents to “F-ck off,” and later urging fans at Download Festival to resist "slipping into fascism."

On July 4, Armstrong led chants of "F-ck Donald Trump" just hours after the commander-in-chief signed the controversial One Big Beautiful Bill.

Even as far back as 2016, during the American Music Awards, the band led a chant of “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA.” Additionally, ahead of the 2024 election, Armstrong urged fans to vote for Kamala Harris, stressing the need to "turn the page" from Trump.

With Green Day now set to open the show in Santa Clara, fans are convinced the lineup carries political undertones, much like Bad Bunny's headlining role.

As The Blast reported in September 2025, when the "Callaita" singer announced his halftime performance, supporters immediately predicted he would use the stage to take aim at Trump.

One fan argued the choice was deliberate, pointing to Bad Bunny's history of criticizing the administration. Another praised organizers for selecting a Latino artist who openly rejects Trump's policies.

Bad Bunny’s reputation for criticizing Trump came to play in his music video for "NUEVAYol", where he openly challenged Trump's policies. The video featured a scene with men listening to a distorted, Trump-like voice delivering exaggerated apologies to immigrants.

Following the “Dakiti” singer’s selection, the U.S. president did not hold back on his disapproval of the NFL’s choice.

As The Blast reported, Trump shared his reaction during an appearance on “Greg Kelly Reports.”

The host reminded him that the Puerto Rican star has openly criticized Trump, opposed ICE, and often frames unfair treatment as racism.

Trump admitted he had never heard of the Grammy winner but quickly turned his frustration toward the league.

" I don't know why they're doing it,” Trump condemned. “It's crazy. And then they blame it on some promoter they hired to pick up entertainment - I think it's absolutely ridiculous.”

Despite the outspoken opposition from Trump, the NFL did not back down on its preference for Bad Bunny.

Commissioner Roger Goodell dismissed the controversy, noting that there has never been any of their headliner announcements that did not spark talk.

He emphasized that the league's choice was "carefully thought through," according to The Blast.

Goodell also expressed confidence in the "Mia" singer's abilities, adding,  "I think it's going to be exciting and a united moment."
