Joshua and his two friends reportedly encountered the unfortunate accident around 11 a.m. on December 29. As shared by The Blast, the Federal Road Safety Corps, in their statement, expressed that the vehicle was seemingly traveling above the required speed limit on the Sagamu axis of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
“The primary causes of the crash, being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways,” the body continued.
The Ogun State Police Commissioner, Lanre Ogunlowo, however, claimed that Joshua’s vehicle experienced a burst tire, which caused the driver to lose control of the steering wheel and crash into the stationary truck.
The commissioner continued that the boxer and another passenger were subsequently evacuated from the ruins of the car and transported to a specialized facility in Lagos state for comprehensive clinical assessment.
Ogunlowo affirmed that Joshua and the driver were confirmed to be stable, with no need for any medical emergency.
Eyewitness Gave Account Of The Moment Anthony Joshua’s Car Crash Unfolded
An individual, Adeniyi Orojo, who was at the scene of the accident, explained that Joshua was in a two-vehicle convoy, including the Lexus SUV he was seated in alongside his pals, and a Pajero SUV, which followed him from behind.
Orojo noted that Joshua was seated directly behind the driver with another person behind him, while the third passenger sat beside the driver, making four occupants in the car. He recalled rushing to the scene of the crash alongside others and calling for help by flagging down cars.
“A few minutes after the crash, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived. The passenger beside the driver and the person beside Joshua died on the spot,” the eyewitness added.
The former heavyweight champion was reportedly in the country on a break after his impressive match with Jake Paul in Miami earlier in December.
The 36-Year-Old’s Fight Timetable For 2026 Reportedly On Shaky Grounds
Joshua closed the year on a high career-wise, but this unforeseen incident may have just poked holes in his plans for 2026, should it take longer for him to bounce back.
As noted by The Blast, the athlete was expected to resume training for a late March fight against kickboxer Rico Verhoeven in Saudi Arabia after his short break in Nigeria.
The Saudi match would serve as a prelude to his $135 duel against Fury later in the year. However, his latest accident has now cast a shadow of doubt on a timely return.
Observers are also questioning his mental readiness to get into a fight, especially after witnessing the loss of two loved ones in the ghastly accident. According to promoter Eddie Hearn, plans are underway to contact the boxer amid heavy speculations that his injuries might be worse than what is being revealed.
Hearn is, however, optimistic about Joshua’s condition, stating that he seemed fine from the images of him that appeared after the crash.
Anthony Joshua's Opponent, Jake Paul, Blamed The Loss On Poor Pre-Game Preparation

A few days before Joshua’s accident, Jake appeared on his brother, Logan Paul’s viral YouTube podcast, “Impaulsive” podcast, where he addressed the aftermath of the encounter within the boxing ring.
Jake admitted that Joshua showed him why he was a boxing champion in the final rounds of the match, where everything went downhill. He recalled the Olympic gold medalist dishing out the heavy punches and “imposing his will” on him, making the defeat both physical and mental.
Jake continued that his loss in that match also stemmed from having just three weeks to prepare. In his words: "I wish I had more than three weeks to prepare, put on more muscle. Sit there and hit him. I should have gone to altitude to train; that was my biggest mistake."
Nevertheless, Jake recognized the powerhouse Joshua is and described the experience of fighting him as once in a lifetime, which also left him with lots of lessons and takeaways.
Sending loads of healing energy Anthony Joshua’s way!
